FAQs
Who needs counseling?
Everyone can benefit from counseling, whether you need help in working through lifetime goals or have trauma that causes you grief, anxiety and/or depression, finding the right counselor to work with you is beneficial. Counseling may seem scary at first, but a therapist can assist you in developing coping skills to enhance your personal, professional and family life. People seek counseling for a variety of reasons including feeling burned out, anxiety that is preventing you from living your life, losing someone or something dear to you, transitioning from a job or relationship that has ended or you have difficulty moving past a traumatic event and want to feel yourself again. Therapy can help you work out some problems you are going through just by providing a different perspective and learning techniques to aid you in your journey.
What is it like to seek counseling?
Counseling can benefit your life by providing a safe space to work out life’s struggles with depression, grief, anxiety or relationship issues. As a licensed professional counselor and marriage and family therapist, I will actively listen to you without judgement and provide expertise to support your growth and change. Additionally, I can also provide a safe environment for couples experiencing communication issues by re-framing ideas so you feel heard by your partner. I hope to challenge you to promote growth and change, at imes the questions may be hard, but by working hard in therapy, the outcome will benefit you in reaching your goals. Clients will meet with me weekly in the beginning of your treatment and then taper to less frequently as therapy progresses. Clients generally stay with me for 3-12 months on average depending on the client and treatment that is being serviced. Set up your appointment online using a HIPPA compliant platform.
What is my first session like?
Sessions are 45-60 minutes long. During your first session I will go over the initial intake paperwork you would have filled out in the online portal prior to the session. Together we will determine the major goals and issues you would like to work on. In addition, I will ask you about questions you filled out in your intake paperwork, this helps me assist you better by getting a global look into your world. We will talk about your concerns and different therapeutic treatment and tools that may be advantageous to your particular issues. A treatment program will be created with you the next session that both of us will agree upon, of course, any changes can be made if needed. The therapy session is for you, and I encourage you to be active in the therapeutic treatment plan to benefit you.
Does online therapy work?
Online therapy has many benefits. It is convenient for both individuals and couples from the comfort of your home or office. Couples can even be in two separate places for a couples therapy session and work with a therapist simultaneously to enhance their relationship. While it mayseem different at first, it is possible for you to have a therapeutic relationship with an online therapist. During the online counseling session, I will be checking in with you to verify what you are communicating, through speech and body language, this “checking in” allows your therapy session to benefit the change and growth you are working by feeling heard and understood. The “checking in” also allows you to clarify your thoughts and feelings if they are misperceived during the therapy session. In my experience, individuals and couples are very comfortable in their own environments and once therapy is started prefer the ease and convenience.
According to a 2014 study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found online treatment for depression was just as effective as a face-to-face counseling session. Similarly, a 2018 study published in the Journal of Psychological Disorders found that online treatment using CBT was equally effective as face-to-face counseling for depression and anxiety. Online therapy has been available and successful before the COVID-19 pandemic began, now online therapy is more available and common.
